"Data providers" can contribute metadata through OAI-PMH. "Descriptive information on the cultural resources (hereafter “metadata”) whose rights of ownership are reserved by the content providers , who participate in CulturaItalia. The metadata, gathered into CulturaItalia’s repository by means of the OAI-PMH protocol and published in the Index, are covered by Italian and international copyright laws; therefore they cannot be, whether in whole or in part, reproduced, distributed, sold, transferred or modified." Thus it seems the metadata cannot be accessed and used by third parties without special permission. |

This is just a tiny selection, quite arbitrary, of what is available.

the list very much determined by cultural/professional background of participants...

Putting together an arbitrary group of people to make such a list in an hour only works to a certain degree. It may be the case that a more structured approach is necessary.

There's also a bunch of gallery, library, archive and museum (GLAM) APIs etc at http://museum-api.pbworks.com/w/page/21933420/Museum%C2%A0APIs (which I'll update following this event with sources that aren't already listed)
